Will Ant re-sign, or will he bolt at the first chance he gets down the road?
Newcastle United is expected to enter contract talks with England international and Magpie forward Anthony Gordon upon his return to the club in the next few days, according to George Caulkin of The Athletic.
The news comes on the heels of Gordon and NUFC being at a potential breaking point regarding his future within the organization following his dangling ahead of the PSR deadline last June 30. The club aims to reward his performances leading to his presence in the Three Lions squad during the Euro 2024, but also to make peace with the man they thought about selling to Liverpool to abide by the Premier League Profitability and Sustainability rules.
Discussions with Liverpool regarding a potential transfer of Gordon took place at the start of the transfer window as Newcastle sought to generate approximately £60 million before the Premier League’s PSR deadline. While it’s true that selling the 23-year-old was considered a last resort,
Newcastle hopes that initiating contract talks will deter further interest from Liverpool, Gordon’s childhood club, which has long admired the Englishman. The love is mutual, mind you, so it is not quite clear if Gordon would prefer to keep things controlled in terms of signing a mid-term deal without an unreasonable salary making a move to Anfield down the road feasible.
Gordon joined Newcastle from the other end of Merseyside, Everton that is, in January 2023 on a long-term contract for an initial fee of £40 million. He left the Toffees with 78 first-team games under his belt before joining Newcastle.
Eddie Howe sounded positive about Gordon’s current mindset and thoughts of Newcastle while naming him one of the key players of his quad ahead of next season.
