Not much in the way of concrete transfer dealings can be done for Leeds right now in the month of March, especially given the fact that their hopes of promotion are on a knife-edge at present.

It hasn’t stopped speculation from forming regarding some potential transfer targets for the club to pursue, should they get back into the Premier League this season.

Leeds interested in Newcastle’s Sean Longstaff – Report

The Sunday Mirror (17/3) has reported that Leeds already have transfer plans in place for the eventuality of promotion this summer, including a Newcastle United swoop.

They claim that Leeds are monitoring Sean Longstaff ahead of a potential move, with the 26-year-old heading into the final 12 months of his contract next season.

A £15million offer is said to be what Leeds are formulating, but it’s a deal that Leeds should be avoiding in favour of other signings.

Here, we look at two midfielders Leeds should have their eyes on before Longstaff…

Gabriel Sara – Norwich City

Leeds saw first-hand two reasons why Gabriel Sara would be a superb signing for any club in the bottom half of the Premier League, scoring and registering an assist in that thrilling 3-2 win for Leeds at Carrow Road earlier in the season.

A gifted left-footer, Sara has been vital to Norwich’s hopes of promotion and is chipping in with a superb return from midfield in double figures for goals and assists already (10G, 11A).

How much the 25-year-old ends up costing might hinge on what happens with Norwich between now and the end of the season, but he’s destined for Premier League football no matter what.

On top of his creativity and ability to arrive in the box late for attacks as another vital asset, his delivery from set-pieces is some of the best in the second tier – something we’re sorely lacking, especially as a left-footer.

Gustavo Hamer – Sheffield United

There are very few players in the current Sheffield United team who deserve even the opportunity of playing Premier League football in the near future – but Gustavo Hamer is one of them.

Signed from Coventry City after playoff final heartbreak, he’s had flashes of brilliance for the Premier League’s basement club this season, with three goals and three assists to his name.

Playing in a side more suited to his strengths like Leeds, playing as part of a three in midfield with protection behind him, he’d be another like Sara that could be a great asset for a bottom-half side.

Relegation is virtually a certainty for the Blades, and a cut-price deal could be on the cards for Hamer, who won’t want to give up PL football after a taste of it this term.
