Amber Hughes was glad to get back on the scoresheet after netting a brace against league leaders Newcastle, but the Old Gold ultimately fell to a late 3-2 defeat at the New Bucks Head.
A quickfire double from the striker in the first half gave Wolves a two-goal lead at the break, however Newcastle came back to win the fixture with goals from Kacie Elson, iJasmne McQuade and Katie Barker, who scored an 89th-minute winner.
Hughes spoke about scoring a brace, the physical test of playing against a professional side, playing up top with Jade Cross, and the upcoming game against West Brom at Molineux on Friday.
On scoring two goals
“On a personal level, I am really glad to get back on the scoresheet. It has been a long time coming.
“I enjoyed those two, but ultimately, it was about the result today as a team, and unfortunately, it has not gone our way.
“We did say at the start it was about performance, and it’s a performance we can be proud of as a team.”
On a tough physical test
“It shows why they are where they are physically. They played really well, and it was tough for us but we competed across the park and we played as a team.
“When one person was going in, there was somebody behind you and someone else there, so from our point of view, it was a really pleasing performance.”
On the partnership with Jade Cross
“It was tough, a lot of running today, but I enjoyed playing up there with Jade. You know she will run and run for you.
“We did as much as we can, but just that physical side, it is hard to compete with a team that is training full-time and getting a lot running in is hard, but I thought we did ourselves proud.”
On the upcoming fixture with West Brom on Friday
“We are really looking forward to Friday. I think we can focus on that now that this is done, and it will give us a different test.
“It will be nice to be at Molineux and have a good support behind us, and we will see if we can hopefully pick up three points there.”
On wanting to replicate scoring at Molineux again this season
“Yes, definitely I hope so, and hopefully they (the goals) will keep coming now.”
