Tottenham staff hailed after what they were spotted doing amid ‘bizarre’ John McGinn incident
John Wenham of Lilywhite Rose was left confused by John McGinn’s “bizarre” reaction after the Aston Villa midfielder was sent off against Tottenham for his challenge on Destiny Udogie.
Ange Postecoglou’s side thrashed a 10-man Aston Villa 4-0 at Villa Park on Sunday (10 March) to move within two points of their top-four rivals.
Goals from James Maddison and Brennan Johnson had put the visitors in a commanding position before McGinn’s reckless tackle on Udogie in the 65th minute which drew outrage from the Spurs players and saw the Scotland international dismissed.
Son Heung-min and Timo Werner added insult to injury in stoppage time as Tottenham recorded their biggest win of the season and Wenham believes the decision to send McGinn off was the correct one.
Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, Wenham, the founder of reputable Spurs podcast Lilywhite Rose, said: “He absolutely had to go.
“It was a dangerous tackle, and I was delighted with the reaction of our coaching staff, substitutes and players on the pitch, who all basically made it impossible for the referees to have any other idea than a straight red card.
“It was bizarre to see McGinn waiting around on the pitch for a significant period of time thinking that VAR was going to save him.
“He had completely lost his head after Villa had already offered nothing up until that point.”
John McGinn will regret his actions after Tottenham thrashed Aston Villa
As Aston Villa captain, McGinn should know better than to put a challenge like that in during a big game.
It was a poor moment for the 29-year-old who has otherwise had a very good season.
McGinn will now be forced to sit out three league matches, which could play a huge part in who qualifies for next season’s UEFA Champions League out of Spurs and Villa.
Postecoglou and his players will be full of confidence after their big win in the West Midlands and will look to carry that confidence with them into the run-in.
Meanwhile, a battered and bruised Villa will be feeling sorry for themselves after the defeat and face a tricky trip to West Ham on Sunday (17 March) without one of their most influential players.
