Despite the Manchester City legend and the Real Madrid phenomenon often being compared, they are two different kinds of midfielders.
While De Bruyne is a specialist in the number ten position, Modric has been renowned for his ability to control games from deeper areas.
Perhaps the comparisons step from the pair arguably being the two midfielders of their generations.
Recently, Mark Schwarzer claimed that the Belgian skipper is capable of playing until his late thirties like the Croatian icon has managed to.
When building a draft for his EA FC 24 team, Destiny Udogie had a choice of picking a midfielder between Kevin De Bruyne, Luka Modric and Andrea Pirlo.
The Italian left-back went on to opt for the five-time Premier League winner during a TikTok video with Tottenham Hotspur.
“I think [Kevin] De Bruyne, a great, great player”, he said.
Kevin De Bruyne has outdone the Real Madrid legend
In our view, Destiny Udogie made the right choice by picking Kevin De Bruyne over Luka Modric.
Expectedly, the counterargument to such a claim would be that the 38-year-old won the Ballon d’Or in 2018.
However, even in that campaign, De Bruyne arguably had a superior season, leading City to the Premier League title.
Luka Modric won the Champions League with Real Madrid in the same campaign but he was not as influential to his team’s success.
At the World Cup, Modric was, however as Croatia reached the final.
But a case could be made that the likes of N’Golo Kante and Paul Pogba outperformed at the tournament.
As far as the past decade goes as well, Kevin De Bruyne has not only been more impactful to this City side than Luka Modric has been to Real Madrid but also, he has perhaps been the best midfielder in the world throughout this period.
While the existence of the debate is understandable, in our eyes, De Bruyne is the clear winner.
