Richard Keys slams VAR and claims referee was ‘scared’ of making Brentford call

Richard Keys has taken aim at the Premier League and VAR in his latest blog post. The beIN SPORTS broadcaster has made a claim about Michael Oliver and David Coote.

Sports presenter, Richard Keys

Richard Keys, former Sky Sports host, has criticised the Premier League and the quality of refereeing within the competition.

Keys argues that during Liverpool’s match against Brentford, lead video assistant referee (VAR) David Coote was hesitant to make Michael Oliver review a decision via the monitor after Ivan Toney was grappled by Liverpool’s Andrew Robertson. Even though Liverpool managed to win 4-1 in this game, there were moments when Brentford seemed to be clearly denied a penalty.

Contemplating on a revelation by Mike Dean, where he admitted his relationship with Anthony Taylor deterred him from rectifying an in-game error, Keys – now a presenter for beIN SPORT – argued it might be fear, not friendship, that caused VAR to refrain from interference.

He suggested the superiority complex of Michael Oliver could have made Coote and, possibly, others too nervous to correct him.

On his blog, Keys stated: “Brentford should’ve had a pen. Robertson knew it was a pen. You can see that by the way he limply kicks the ball away after clattering Toney.”

“The only person in the ground that didn’t think it was a pen was Michael Oliver. What happened to VAR? David Coote went missing because he knows that Oliver is never going to accept someone he regards as inferior to him sending him to a monitor.”
