Michael Beale issues Patrick Roberts injury update ahead of Birmingham vs Sunderland

The winger was brought on in the 1-0 defeat to Huddersfield in the week and made a positive impact as the visitors looked to steal a point

However, his cameo came at a cost as Roberts has now injured his hamstring as Sunderland goes into a crucial part of the season.

Beale’s side has been inconsistent of late, with the Black Cats unable to replicate their performance at the Stadium of Light last weekend in Yorkshire.

Plenty of things went wrong with Beale highlighting the side’s set-piece problem. Statistics also point towards a real issue in front of goal for Sunderland.

Now, Roberts’ injury will only add to the Black Cats’ list of problems as Beale offers more clarity on the situation.

Patrick Roberts injury ‘horrible for Sunderland’

Roberts has had little luck with injuries this season. The winger was forced to miss multiple games at the start of the year due to a knock.

While reporters of Roberts’ new injury surfaced during the week, Beale has now confirmed the extent of the situation.

“With Paddy he scan is today, it’s the other side of the hamstring to what he did earlier in the season, but we think it’s very similar,” Beale said to Sunderland Echo.

“It’s obviously a real sore one for us to take because we tried to manage his minutes. We were managing a calf and then managed to get a hamstring. It’s horrible for Paddy and the team to be honest.”

Sunderland player must step up due to Patrick Roberts’ injury

The situation is far from ideal from a Sunderland perspective. With the club struggling to break down teams, Roberts was one player who could offer some help in this department. Now, the players must step up and help fill this hole over the next couple of games.

Beale has already provided a positive update on Callum Styles’ return and potential debut on the weekend. The Hungarian could help overcome this issue while Robert recovers.

Romaine Mundle could also be the answer. The next test away to Birmingham could be the perfect opportunity for him to step up and secure all three points for the Black Cats
