Ipswich Town legend Mick Mills has advised Blues star Leif Davis to be cautious of overcommitting himself going forward and reminded him that he has his defensive duty to perform during games.
The 24-year-old left-back has established himself as a starter in Kieran McKenna’s starting line-up and has registered 13 assists in 27 league games this season.
Ipswich’s form has taken a dip and several former players have criticised the Tractor Boys defensive unit for failing to perform their duties.
Mills indicated that McKenna should reconsider whether Davis is being too attacking too early in the game and suggested to the left-back that he should be a bit more cautious before going forward.
The former Ipswich star also added that he has no problem with Davis going forward in situations where the Blues can profit from his involvement, but reminded him that he cannot go up frequently and creep around the opposition box, neglecting his defensive duties.
“I am okay if there is an absolute 100 per cent situation in front of you.
“Go and go with belief, and that is your job to do it, but do not keep creeping up there time and time again in the hope that something is going to happen.
“Just early in the game, be a little bit more cautious, sit just a little more to George’s [Edmundson] left-hand side, and fill that hole; after all, you have somebody to mark out there, a right-side attacker.
“And sometimes they are clever enough not to go with you if they think you are going in a non-adventurous position, they will let you go and they will catch you on the break.”
Ipswich have won only one out of their last nine league games and it remains to be seen whether they will be able to shrug off their poor run of form to win against Millwall on Wednesday.
