JUST IN: Dan Ballard has agreed to a longer contract with Sunderland. What are our thoughts?

With the classy defender signed up to 2028, it’s another big boost ahead of the 2024/2025 sea Our writers have their say on Ballard’s new deal!

I’m absolutely thrilled that Ballard will be extending his stay at Sunderland.

As a fan, this is truly a moment to celebrate, as Ballard has been an indispensable part of our defence whenever he’s fit, and his ability to anchor our back line is something we’ve come to rely on.

Ballard’s qualities on the pitch are hard to ignore.

His decision making is consistently sharp, his tackling is precise, and his understanding of the game is top notch. He combines strength with a deft touch in aerial duels, making him a formidable presence in our defence and it’s no exaggeration to say that he has the potential to shine in the Premier League.

While it might sound like I’m his biggest fan, and perhaps I am, it’s clear that he’s been one of the most positive aspects of our club over the past decade and given the challenges we’ve faced in recent years, that’s saying a lot.

What’s even more remarkable is how the management team at Sunderland has managed to negotiate this extension.

After a season where we didn’t quite meet our aspirations and faced the disappointment of a lower league position, it’s impressive to see that the club is still able to retain key players like Ballard. This kind of achievement underscores the club’s commitment to not just rebuilding, but truly aiming for a brighter future.

I’d prepared myself for the possibility that Ballard might be snapped up by higher tier clubs such as West Ham or Leicester, and given his talents and the interest he’s likely attracted, it’s understandable.
