JUST IN; Wrexham ace Paul Mullin makes shock goalscoring claim as he nears incredible landmark for Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney’s side

Paul Mullin insists his main aim this year is Wrexham’s promotion to League One, despite nearing an incredible goalscoring landmark for the club.

  • But insists focus is promotion to League One
  • Says he’d happily not score again to achieve aim
  • The Red Dragons marksman was on target in the 3-1 win over Grimsby on Saturday, scoring Wrexham’s third with a beautiful spin and volley inside the box. That effort brought Mullin up to 97 goals for the club and Wrexham three points above the play-off spots. However, the Liverpool-born forward insists it is the latter target that he is more bothered about, and that he’d happily “not score another goal” this term to make that happen.

  • WHAT MULLIN SAID

“All I care about is getting promoted,” he underlined to The Leader after Saturday’s victory. “If I didn’t score another goal and we went up then my job is done. “It will be a great achievement, but it’s not something I really think about. It will be lovely to get there as quickly as possible, but equally if I don’t get there at all but we keep winning every week then I’ll be happy.”

On his impressive effort for Wrexham against Grimsby, Mullin explained: “Obviously I know the goal doesn’t move and I know where it is at all times during the game. It was just full concentration on making sure I connected properly and hit it back across the goalkeeper. From there hopefully no-one is on the line and it manages to go in, and it was a great finish.”

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Saturday’s victory, thanks in part to fourth-placed MK Dons’ heavy defeat, was crucial in widening the gap between the automatic and play-off promotion places. But it was also key in stopping the rot at Wrexham, with Phil Parkinson’s side taking just one point from their previous two matches at The Racecourse. However, that form going into the back-end of the season didn’t phase Mullin. “They were disappointing results-wise but I thought we played really well in those games,” he added.

“Against Grimsby we had four shots in the first-half and scored three goals while in the other games we had more than 25 shots. It just happens. It was more for the fans to get over the disappointment, we are quietly confident in how we play and we know on a different day the last two games could have been a totally different story. We played really well against Grimsby again and won. I thought we were very good.”

Three teams go up automatically from League Two while a fourth is decided from the play-offs. Mansfield, Stockport and Wrexham currently make up the top three with 73, 71 and 70 points respectively, with Stockport having played a game less. As it stands, Wrexham’s biggest rivals to automatic promotion are Barrow. They are sixth on 64 points but have played a game less than the Red Dragons, meaning they would move within three points of the Welsh club with a victory.
