Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood is spending the current season on loan at Getafe and has not played for the Premier League club in more than two years
Manchester United players are supportive of Mason Greenwood returning to the club after a poll among squad members, it has been claimed.
United forward Greenwood was suspended by the club in in January 2022 after allegations against him were brought to light, and he was subsequently charged with one count of attempted rape, a count of assault and repeatedly engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour. All charges against the footballer were later dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service in February 2023.
After an internal investigation, United indicated the England international would be allowed to continue his career away from Old Trafford. He has spent the 2023-24 season on loan at Getafe, having agreed a move to the Spanish club at the end of the summer transfer window.
There has been reported interest in a permanent move for Greenwood – who is under contract at United until 2025 – from other clubs in Spain. However, after comments from United minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe about the forward’s future at Old Trafford, questions have been asked about whether we might see Greenwood in a United shirt again.
“We will make a decision, correct,” Ratcliffe said. “All I can do is talk about the principle of how we will approach decisions like that. Is he the right type of footballer, are we happy with if is he a good person or not?
“He’s a Manchester United footballer, so we are in charge of football. So the answer is ‘Yeah, we have to make decisions’. It’s quite clear we have to make a decision. There is no decision that’s been made. He’s on-loan obviously, but he’s not the only one. We’ve got one or two footballers that we have to deal with and we have to make a decision on so we will do that.
“The process will be: understand the facts not the hype, and then try and come to fair decision on the basis of values, which is basically is he a good guy or not? Could he play sincerely for Manchester United well, would we be comfortable with it and would the fans be comfortable with it?”

Now, according to The Sun, it appears members of United’s squad would not be against a return for the 22-year-old. The publication cites a source who claims the players understand a return would be controversial, with their support regarded as a “footballing” decision.
