Ally McCoist makes Leicester City and Leeds United prediction amid Southampton battle

McCoist has provided his prediction on who will finish in the top two of the Championship at the end of this term.

  •  Ally McCoist believes Leicester City and Leeds United will win automatic promotion.
  •  This is despite the fact both teams suffered setbacks last weekend.
  •  Ipswich Town and Southampton are also in the race to secure a top-two finish.
  • Pundit Ally McCoist believes Leeds United and Leicester City are the two teams that will be promoted at the end of the season, speaking on talkSPORT.
  • Both teams suffered some disappointing results at the weekend, with Leicester losing again as they suffered a 2-1 home defeat against Queens Park Rangers.

Despite recent setbacks against the likes of Leeds and Middlesbrough, the Foxes would have been confident about getting themselves back on track against Marti Cifuentes’ side.

Unfortunately for the league leaders, they were unable to and they currently sit just three points above Ipswich Town, who are currently in second place.

  • Leeds, meanwhile, fell out of the top two following their away draw at strugglers Huddersfield Town, and Daniel Farke’s team will be hoping to get themselves back to winning ways as quickly as possible.

The Whites can’t be too hard on themselves though, having won all of their league games except that one in 2024.

But they must be wary of Southampton, who aren’t out of the top-two race just yet despite some poor results recently.

A thrilling 4-3 win at Birmingham City last weekend has allowed the Saints to put themselves back in the frame and they will be desperate to build on their victory at St Andrew’s.

Ally McCoist on the Leicester City, Ipswich Town, Leeds United and Southampton promotion race

Leicester have lost a lot of momentum recently and Leeds currently aren’t in the top two.

But McCoist is still backing both to secure a top-two spot at the end of this term, telling talkSPORT (via Leeds United News): “Corr, I think Leicester will hang on and I’ve got to say we had a good conversation you [Jeff Stelling] and I about Southampton, I was really impressed with them up at Liverpool for 45 minutes, an hour.

  • “But I think Leeds’s home support might see them through. It’s a brilliant league, it’s such a tough, tough one to call.

“But I think if you’re asking me right now I’ll go with the two Ls, Leeds and Leicester.”

Ipswich Town can’t be underestimated in the promotion race

  • They may have the least resources, but Ipswich have been consistent enough to deserve to be promoted again.

The pressure factor may also come into it.

The other three teams in the automatic promotion race are all expected to seal promotion at the first time of asking, but Ipswich certainly aren’t expected to finish in the top two.

High expectations of other teams could cause them to crumble, potentially allowing the Tractor Boys to capitalise.
