JUST IN; Conor Coady says Spurs star’s ‘character’ often goes unnoticed behind the scenes

Conor Coady believes that James Maddison can be an important player for England at next summer’s European Champions, not just because of his quality on the pitch but also because of what he brings off it.

James Maddison

Maddison had a brilliant start to his Tottenham career after his move from Leicester City last summer, with the attacking midfielder arguably being the best player across the Premier League in the first three months of the season.

The 27-year-old has perhaps not been able to hit the same heights since returning from his ankle injury and has looked a little rusty, which is perhaps to be expected, given the length of time that he spent on the sidelines.

Ange Postecoglou will be hoping that his vice-captain soon returns to his best and helps fire his side to a top-four finish this season.

Irrespective of how Maddison does over the coming months, one would think that the Tottenham man is nailed on to be on the plane for the Euros next summer.

James Maddison receives a glowing review from Coady

Coady certainly believes that Gareth Southgate cannot afford to leave out the midfielder, explaining that the Spurs star adds a lot to the camp even if he is not playing.

While speaking about the England squad, the centre-back said on the Rest is Football podcast: “Somebody like James Maddison, who now is playing absolutely unbelievable. But his character and what he is like around camp, which I think goes unnoticed as well. In terms of what he brings to the camp, it’s absolutely unbelievable.”

Postecoglou’s decision to hand Maddison the vice-captaincy last summer even though he had just arrived at Tottenham, is perhaps an indication of the kind of leadership that the midfielder possesses. He has undoubtedly become a huge influence in the England dressing room and is certain to be on the plane to Germany.
